Arcem plans two data centres at Mongstad

Local newspaper Strilen reports on Arcem’s plans for two data centres in Alver and Austrheim, with a combined power requirement of up to 125 MW.

One data centre is planned in Alver municipality, with up to 50 MW and a main building of around 4,300 m². The other will be in Leirvåg in Austrheim, with up to 75 MW and around 11,500 m². Together the two sites will have almost 16,000 m² of building footprint.

Both projects have secured a place in Statnett’s capacity queue. Full capacity depends on Statnett’s planned grid reinforcements in Western Norway, including the third supply line. Arcem expects the facilities to be operational around 2031–2032 and is looking into connecting parts of them earlier through a phased grid connection.

The next step is zoning. Arcem wants start-up meetings with both municipalities. The company will also explore whether surplus heat from the data centres can be used by other businesses in the area, and it intends to use suppliers with local ties wherever possible.

“We see strong interest in data centre capacity in Norway, particularly in Western Norway, where conditions for renewable power are good,” says Anders Bakken Eriksen, CEO of Bonum and Arcem.
